STILL Hybrid Trucks in series production

The new STILL RX 70 diesel truck with hybrid drive

With the new RX 70 Hybrid the Hamburg based STILL GmbH takes the next step on the way to low energy consumption and low CO2 emission. The truck has been devised on the basis of the successful RX 70 diesel truck and is the first hybrid lift truck made in serial production.

The new RX 70 is equipped with two energy saving systems. Beside the diesel tank, the truck is equipped with SuperCaps which are installed on the counter weight. These high performing twin layer capacitors are charged with the energy released during braking. When accelerating, this energy from the capacitors is used to give an additional boost to move the truck forward. In addition the diesel engine generates electric energy for the drive motor. All systems are combined by the power electrics which also controls charging and discharging the additional energy storage.

SUPER-CAPS AS STORAGE FOR ELECTRIC ENERGY

In general, different systems are available to store the energy. Required are good energy and performance density, cyclic endurance and a high degree of efficiency. Super-Caps are characterised by their ability to absorb high currents quickly and to provide this energy just as quickly. The support from the storage reduces the work load of the IC engine by up to 30 percent, reducing the speed of the internal combustion engine by about six percent due to the support of the electric motor from the Super-Caps.

The ideal application of the RX 70 Hybrid is in industries requiring frequent braking and acceleration, for example, when loading and unloading lorries in the beverage industry. Depending on the intensity of the work cycles up to 11 percent energy can be saved.

ECO-AWARD ALREADY FOR THE STANDARD MODEL

The standard RX 70 in the market has already drawn attention to its low fuel consumption. Against this background the "Fork Lift Truck Association" (FLTA) in Great Britain has awarded the standard truck with the FLTA ECO-award 2008. In spite of high turnover performance the fuel consumption lies at only 2.5 litres per hour (RX 70 -2.5 tonnes, 60 work cycles per hour according to the new VDI 2198).

With the new RX 70 Hybrid STILL takes the next step and will test the market acceptance in field tests with customers.

The future oriented truck is an important component in the overall STILL concept always optimising intralogistics by outstandingly efficient warehouse trucks bearing the responsibility for the environment in mind.
